What has it been like welcoming Hiro into your home, and what surprised you most about his personality?
Adopting Hiro (formerly known as Jerome) has been one of the greatest joys of our life. Despite Hiro's rough introduction to the world, he is happy and loving to his core. He has adjusted very well. He also has the unique ability to make a stranger smile everyday — he just truly is a ray of light. His olympic level athleticism despite having lost a leg also makes him unique. We watch everyday as dogs at the park try to keep up with him.
How has Hiro adjusted to daily life, and what progress have you seen?
Where Hiro was initially scared to be left alone, he is now comfortable and calm knowing that we will always come back to him (and with a little help from trazodone). He makes every day better and we're so lucky to have him.
What would you like others to know about adopting a special dog like Hiro?
Adopting a dog is adding a new member to your family, which means adding a new source of unconditional love. The beginning may be a bit overwhelming but you shouldn't be afraid to ask for help/look for a trainer. It's absolutely worth it.
