Cheddar, a Pomeranian mix, was rescued shortly before euthanasia from the overcrowded Jeongeup Municipal Shelter in rural South Korea. He is now enjoying life in a busy foster home full of other dogs and cats while he waits for a family of his own.
He is a playful, affectionate little companion — all ten pounds of him — who gets along well with small dogs and cats. His ideal home offers daily walks, playtime, and a calm atmosphere without very young children or large resident dogs.
Cheddar enjoys toys, zoomies, playing with the other dogs, and spending time with his person. He watches the other dogs closely and sometimes copies exactly what they do — his foster says he studies them and then follows suit.
He is sensitive to loud noises and to changes in his environment. His foster recommends allowing about two weeks for him to become properly comfortable, though that will vary by home. He is not a timid dog; he is simply a noise-sensitive one.
His foster’s favorite detail: the way he comes scampering over on quick little steps to ask for a treat and a cuddle.
Small dogs: Cheddar gets along well with the poodle, the long-haired dachshund, the mixed-breed dog, and the puppy he currently lives with. He enjoys playing and walking with all of them, and he is contentedly last in the pecking order — he waits for the older girls to finish eating before he starts.
Large dogs: Generally uninterested. He dislikes dogs who approach too closely or push their faces into his space without manners, though no barking or biting has been reported in those situations. A home without large dogs is preferred.
He would be happy either as an only dog or in a multi-dog home with dogs of a similar size. No resource guarding has been observed at all.
Cheddar lives very comfortably with three cats — two adults and a kitten. His foster’s note on the subject was emphatic: he gets along with them very, very well. A home with cats is genuinely a good fit for him, not just a possibility.
| House trained | Mostly. He goes outdoors first and uses an indoor potty pad when he needs to, and his foster reports no routine accidents. He does mark, however, so regular walks matter — his foster puts a belly band on him indoors if he misses one. Expect to continue outdoor potty training and to manage the marking during his adjustment. |
| Alone time | About 9 hours on weekdays, with the other pets around him. No separation anxiety has been observed in that setting — he plays with the other dogs, then naps. Worth knowing: his ability to be completely alone without animal company has not been established. |
| Barking | He may bark briefly when someone unfamiliar comes into the home. Calling his name and offering a treat settles him quickly. |
| Destructive behavior | None, ever. His foster reports not a single incident. |
| Car rides | He travels well on drives and trips with no reported motion sickness at all — his foster takes him along on outings happily. |
| Favorite activities | Squeaky toys, crinkle toys, tug, playing with the other dogs, and running on grass in a securely enclosed area. He has good stamina and loves a good zoomie session. |
| Crate training | Yes — there is always a crate available at home and Cheddar likes resting and sleeping in it. At night he currently sleeps in his caregiver’s bed. |
| Grooming & handling | Very cooperative for bathing — he genuinely enjoys it. He does not particularly like having his teeth brushed but allows it. |
About an hour of walking each evening, usually between six and seven o’clock once his foster is home from work. He loves his walks and walks well alongside the other dogs.
Loud noises may make him pause briefly, but he carries on. His recall is good — he recognizes his name remarkably well and comes running when called with a treat. Regular walks are not optional for him: they are what keeps the marking under control.
Cheddar is reported healthy with no additional health concerns. He is neutered and vaccinated. He previously had heartworm, completed treatment successfully, and now tests negative. His body condition is normal at about 10.4 lbs (4.7 kg), and no allergies have been reported.
His last parasite prevention was NexGard on September 13. Veterinarian-approved heartworm, flea, tick, and intestinal parasite prevention should continue on the prescribed monthly schedule throughout the year, including winter.
He eats a salmon-based kibble, is currently free-fed, and eats at his own pace — often waiting until the other dogs have finished. He is not remotely picky and enjoys a wide variety of treats.
For gear sizing: neck 26 cm (about 10.2 in), chest 42 cm (about 16.5 in).
Cheddar needs a calm home with daily walks and plenty of playtime. He gets along very well with dogs of a similar size, so a multi-dog household suits him, and a home with cats is entirely fine — he already lives with three. He loves running on wide grass, so access to a securely enclosed dog park or yard would make him very happy.
Best avoided: homes that are loud or full of over-the-top activity, which he finds hard to handle. His foster specifically asks to avoid homes with very young children or with large resident dogs.
Give him about two weeks to settle, keep the walks regular, and he will show you the playful, affectionate little dog his foster knows.
“Cheddar is a bit sensitive to changes in his environment, so he needs about two weeks to really warm up to you. He watches what the other dogs are doing very carefully and then copies it exactly. And when he comes pattering over on those quick little feet, asking for a treat and wanting to be held — that is the cutest thing. He isn’t a timid dog at all; he is just sensitive to loud noise.”
